Through paintings and performance I investigate reinserting the body in spaces with the intention of holding power. While thinking about the personal, I create paintings about an unlearning of submissiveness and contrite as a black woman. I stand in to offer a place of contemplation about black interiority and black liberation, often asking myself, what is different inside that it is worn outside? What is the difference between holding a spot and having a place?
LaTonia Allen is a multidisciplinary artist based in the Bronx, NY. Her work centers around themes exploring liberation, agency and the body with a focus on portraiture and figuration. LaTonia washes and redacts splashes of oils and charcoal to create abstract environments for her subjects to move in and out of. Filled with symbolism and hidden text, she depicts strong women thinking about the relation between the body and space in both historical and future contexts.
